LIVING
BUILDINGS
Design Led
Initiative for Integrating Energy and Aesthetics

The growing chorus of concern over the ever-increasing detail of
prescriptive standards and codes related to the design and construction of
the built environment has changed from discordant descent toward a rich
harmony of cooperation and action. The realization that, as all living
creatures consume calories of energy in their varied living pursuits, so
buildings consume BTU’s of energy to provide the varied environments
required by human beings, has significantly altered the debate on how to
best address the balance between human needs and energy resources.
Increasingly, the famous quotation that “form follows function” is being
seen as an appropriate metaphor for living buildings; that the function of a
building can and should be determined by the harmonious combination of its
location, form, and systems. And as living creatures come in a vast number
of forms as best suits their living functions, so buildings can and should
be designed with various combinations of location, form, and systems as best
suits the needs of its human occupants.
As a member of this chorus, the IES has made and is
making significant contributions in this continuing effort by developing
initiatives related to lighting quality, energy consumption metrics, and
public policy. This presentation will provide information on these
initiatives and is intended for all designers involved with the built
environment.
